Foreign Language (French) Curriculum
Intent
At Hexham First School, we believe that learning a language provides a valuable educational, social, and cultural experience. It helps pupils develop essential communication skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, while laying the foundations for future language learning. Learning another language opens windows to the world, giving children a broader perspective, and encouraging them to understand and appreciate both their own culture and those of others.
Implementation
We use the Language Angels scheme to teach French in Key Stage 2, providing structured, engaging lessons that build language skills progressively.
-
Key Stage 2: Pupils have weekly French lessons delivered by their class teachers using the Language Angels scheme. Lessons are adapted to meet the needs of our children, ensuring progress in all areas of language learning.
Impact
Our French curriculum ensures all pupils develop key language skills as outlined by the National Curriculum. By the end of each stage, pupils can:

Engage in conversations: ask and answer questions, express opinions, and seek clarification
-
Speak in sentences using familiar vocabulary, phrases, and basic structures
-
Develop accurate pronunciation and intonation
-
Present ideas and information orally to different audiences
-
Read and understand words, phrases, and simple texts
-
Appreciate stories, songs, poems, and rhymes in the language
-
Broaden vocabulary and understand new words in context
-
Write phrases from memory and adapt them to create new sentences
-
Describe people, places, things, and actions orally and in writing
-
Develop an interest in and awareness of cultural differences
Our curriculum inspires a love of language learning, giving pupils the skills and confidence to communicate effectively and explore the wider world.
