Aims
The national curriculum for music aims to ensure that all pupils:
-
Perform, listen, review, and evaluate music across a variety of historical periods, genres, styles, and traditions, including the works of renowned composers and musicians.
-
Develop their musical skills, including singing, using their voices, creating and composing music individually and collaboratively, learning to play a musical instrument, using technology in music, and progressing to higher levels of musical achievement.
-
Understand how music is created and communicated, exploring its inter-related dimensions such as pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure, and appropriate musical notation.
Curriculum
At Hexham First, we follow the ‘Charanga Music School’ scheme of work. This programme fully supports the National Curriculum and gives children access to a wide range of musical concepts and experiences.
The Charanga scheme provides:
-
Week-by-week lesson plans for each year group
-
Support for both specialist and non-specialist teachers
-
Clear progression and assessment tools
-
Engaging whiteboard resources to enhance every lesson
Through this approach, all our pupils enjoy a rich, structured, and inspiring music education
Enrichment
Singing Practice
Each week, Mrs Beveridge and Mrs Overton lead the school in singing a carefully chosen selection of songs and hymns. The children love these sessions and enjoy the opportunity to sing together.
Ukulele
We have a specialist music teacher who delivers Ukulele lessons to all Key Stage 2 pupils, giving them the chance to learn a musical instrument and develop their skills.
