At Hexham First School, we strongly believe that learning to read—and developing a lifelong love of reading—is fundamental to every child’s success as a learner and as a future member of society. We aim to inspire our children to read every day, both at home and in school, helping them to grow not only as skilled readers but as enthusiastic, thoughtful lovers of books.

We know that reading opens the door to all learning. Our goal is to ensure that every child becomes a fluent, confident reader who can access the wider curriculum, develop a rich vocabulary, and experience the joy and escapism that reading can bring.

Our Reading Aims:

  • To build on the language experiences and early reading skills children bring with them to school.

  • To support children as they grow from inexperienced readers to independent, fluent readers who engage with a wide range of texts for different purposes.

  • To maintain high expectations for all pupils, supporting them in achieving the highest possible standards in reading.

  • To ensure that reading is both a tool for learning and a source of pleasure, whether independently or shared with peers or adults.

  • To encourage children to use reading as a way to pursue personal interests, expand their knowledge, and develop research skills.

  • To promote an understanding that reading is essential not only in school but throughout life.

Our Approach to Reading:

  • We foster a love of books and reading through a rich reading environment in every classroom and in our brand-new school library—a beautifully designed, inviting space where children can enjoy a wide range of high-quality texts in comfort.

  • Teachers read aloud to children every day, sharing a variety of high-quality fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. These sessions develop language, model fluent reading, and spark curiosity and imagination.

  • We teach both key aspects of reading:

    • Word recognition and decoding skills – taught systematically in EYFS and KS1 through daily phonics sessions using the Read Write Inc. (RWI) programme.

    • Language comprehension skills – developed through rich discussion, questioning, and guided reading opportunities, allowing children to understand, interpret, and engage deeply with texts.

  • Children progress through carefully selected, levelled books, including those used with the Accelerated Reader programme, ensuring that they read texts matched to their ability while being appropriately challenged.

  • Reading for pleasure is central to our ethos, with time dedicated daily to independent reading, shared reading, and book talk across all year groups.

Comprehension at Hexham First School – 2025

At Hexham First School, we believe that developing strong comprehension skills is just as important as learning to decode. While phonics lays the foundation for reading, it is language comprehension that enables children to understand, interpret, and enjoy texts.

To support the development of comprehension across the school, we use the VIPERS approach, which provides a consistent structure for teaching and practising key reading skills from Year 1 upwards.

What Are VIPERS?

VIPERS is an acronym that helps children (and teachers) remember the six core reading domains set out in the National Curriculum for England. These are the essential skills children need to master in order to become confident, capable readers.

Each letter in VIPERS stands for a different reading skill:

  • VVocabulary: Understanding new or challenging words in context.

  • IInference: Reading between the lines to understand what is implied.

  • PPrediction: Using clues to anticipate what might happen next.

  • EExplanation: Justifying opinions and explaining ideas clearly.

  • RRetrieval: Finding and recalling information directly from the text.

  • SSequence (KS1) / Summarise (KS2):

    • Sequencing focuses on the order of events (used mainly in KS1).

    • Summarising involves identifying key points or themes (used in KS2).

How We Use VIPERS

  • Daily Comprehension Sessions: VIPERS is used daily, especially in KS2, as part of our reading comprehension lessons. These sessions are carefully planned to focus on one or more reading skills at a time.

  • Text Variety: Pupils explore a range of high-quality fiction, non-fiction, and poetry texts to practise and apply VIPERS strategies in different contexts.

  • Questioning and Discussion: Teachers use VIPERS to guide targeted questioning, encouraging pupils to think deeply about texts and justify their responses with evidence.

  • Tracking and Targeting: VIPERS also supports teachers in tracking which skills pupils are confident in and where more practice or support is needed. This ensures that comprehension teaching is precisely targeted to pupil needs.

  • Inclusive for All Abilities: Because VIPERS is skills-based, it is adaptable for a wide range of learners. All children, regardless of reading level, engage in meaningful comprehension activities and discussion.

Reading and Phonics Assessment at Hexham First School – 2025

At Hexham First School, we are committed to ensuring that all children become confident, fluent readers who develop a lifelong love of reading. Through a combination of high-quality teaching, carefully chosen schemes, and targeted interventions, we support every child in developing strong reading and phonics skills from the moment they join us.

Phonics Assessment and Delivery

We use the Read Write Inc. (RWI) programme as our core phonics scheme in Early Years and Key Stage 1. RWI is a highly structured programme that supports the teaching of synthetic phonics, enabling children to decode words, develop fluency, and read with increasing confidence.

  • Phonics is taught daily in EYFS and KS1.

  • Assessment takes place every half term, and groupings are updated to reflect children's current phonic knowledge and progress.

  • Pupils identified as needing additional support receive RWI 1:1 intervention, led by trained staff.

Reading Assessment and Practice

Key Stage 1

  • Pupils take part in a daily RWI session, which includes reading a matched Storybook each day.

  • Each week, children bring home a Book Bag Book that is directly matched to their current phonics level

  • Children are provided with a Reading Diary which is used to record reading at home and at school, encouraging regular reading practice and promoting home-school communication.

Key Stage 2

  • Pupils engage in whole-class reading comprehension through VIPERS sessions four times a week, focusing on developing deep understanding of texts.

  • Pupils read their Accelerated Reader (AR) book independently every day. These books are precisely matched to their reading level, based on regular STAR Reader assessments.

  • After finishing each AR book, pupils complete an online comprehension quiz, which informs the level of their next book and allows teachers to monitor progress.

Interventions and Support

We understand that children progress at different rates, and we are proactive in identifying those who need extra support:

  • In Key Stage 1, children who are not yet secure in phonics receive daily 1:1 tuition using the RWI intervention programme.

  • Regular phonics and reading assessments help us to identify gaps early and put in place targeted interventions.

  • Pupil progress meetings are used to ensure that support is appropriate and that children are making good or better progress.

Reading Schemes

Key Stage 1

  • RWI Book Bag Books are the principal reading scheme books used to support phonics-based reading at home and in school.

  • Children are sent home with a Book Bag Book weekly, which is fully matched to their current phonics level.

  • For children who wish to read more than one book per week, we also provide a ‘grapple book’:

    • This is a carefully levelled book (aligned with Book Bands, Oxford Reading Tree levels and National Curriculum expectations).

    • The book contains known sounds and provides a comfortable yet slightly challenging read.

    • Teachers are responsible for selecting the grapple book to ensure it complements the child’s current phonics stage.

Key Stage 2

  • Pupils have access to a wide range of fiction and non-fiction books across different genres and topics.

  • All books are levelled using the Accelerated Reader (AR) programme, ensuring that each child reads books matched to their current reading ability.

  • Regular STAR assessments provide accurate data on reading age, progress, and next steps.

Developing a Love of Reading at Hexham First School

  • Weekly Library Sessions
    Every child visits our brand new, beautiful, well-stocked school library once a week to explore and change their books.

  • Annual Visit to Hexham Library
    All pupils visit Hexham Library each year, helping them build positive associations with reading and libraries in the wider community.

  • Reading Areas in Every Classroom
    Each classroom features a dedicated reading space filled with high-quality books, providing pupils with daily access to literature.

  • Grapple Books (KS1 & KS2)
    Pupils choose a ‘grapple book’ to keep in their tray—a book of choice that offers a comfortable challenge and is read purely for pleasure.

  • Pie Corbett Reading Spine (KS2)
    Children in Key Stage 2 enjoy six quality novels each year from the Pie Corbett core list, selected for their literary merit and appeal.

  • Whole School Reading Spine
    Across six years at Hexham First, pupils are read to, discuss, and work with around 82 core texts, forming a carefully selected, progressive whole-school reading spine. While rooted in Pie Corbett’s Reading Spine, this is enhanced by diverse, contemporary, and classic texts.

  • Poetry Spine
    We use The Works: Key Stage 1 and 2 to provide a bank of poems for every year group. These are woven through the curriculum and used for performance, discussion, and inspiration for writing.

  • Non-Fiction Focus
    High-quality non-fiction texts are used across the curriculum. Children are also encouraged to choose non-fiction texts from the school library to pursue personal interests.

  • Celebrating Authors
    Staff select books from a wide range of authors, including local writers, new voices, and well-known names, giving children a rich and varied reading diet.

Reading Enrichment and Events

  • World Book Day
    A much-loved highlight of the year, celebrated with themed activities, costumes, and a school-wide focus on favourite books and characters.

  • Author Visits and Bookshop Trips
    Meeting real authors and visiting local bookshops helps children see themselves as readers and writers in the real world.

  • Book Swap Events
    Pupils take part in book swaps to share stories they love and discover new reads recommended by their peers.

  • Library Reading Challenge
    Pupils are encouraged to take part in the annual Hexham Library Reading Challenge, setting personal reading goals and earning certificates and prizes.

  • Bedtime Reading Event
    A special evening where parents and children return to school in pyjamas to enjoy stories, hot chocolate, and the joy of reading together.

Reading at Home

We believe that reading at home plays a crucial role in your child’s development. Just 10 minutes of daily reading can:

At Hexham First School, we use Read Write Inc. (RWI) as our main phonics and early reading programme in Early Years and Key Stage 1.

Read Write Inc. is a highly structured and proven literacy programme that helps children learn to read accurately and fluently, with strong emphasis on synthetic phonics. It combines daily phonics lessons with reading practice, helping children develop essential skills and a love of reading from the very beginning.

How It Works

  • Children are grouped by reading ability and taught in small, focused groups.

  • Lessons take place daily to ensure consistency and build reading confidence quickly.

  • Each session includes:

    • Learning new sounds (phonemes and graphemes)

    • Practising reading and spelling words containing those sounds

    • Reading a matched Storybook to develop fluency and comprehension

  • The programme also includes writing activities, helping children apply their phonics to spelling and sentence writing.
