Nursery and Early Years at Hexham First School

Our Nursery and Reception children join together in a welcoming, exciting, and caring Early Years unit that makes the most of our extensive indoor and outdoor environments. From exploring the best grassy bank to roll down and excavate, to engaging in thoughtfully designed learning areas, children thrive in a calm and inspiring setting.

Both Nursery and Reception pupils benefit greatly from sharing this nurturing space, ensuring that those moving from Nursery to Reception experience a smooth and confident transition.

Continuous Provision for Independent Learning

Children have access to all learning areas both inside the classroom and outdoors through what is known as ‘continuous provision.’ This approach allows children to lead their own learning by choosing activities that spark their curiosity and creativity. Our teachers and teaching assistants observe and work alongside the children to enhance their learning, develop essential skills, and encourage the application of taught skills in their play.

We actively encourage children to explore all areas of the environment, helping them to build confidence and reach their full potential at school.

A Child-Centred Approach

At Hexham First Nursery, we follow each child’s natural inquisitiveness, embarking on incredible learning adventures inspired by the children’s individual interests or ‘sparks.’ Our dedicated staff respond to these interests to create engaging and personalised learning experiences.
